Happenings
Lent Services - On Wednesday, February 17th, we will mark the beginning of the season of Lent with an evening worship service at 7 o’clock in Maly Kostol. Ash Wednesday is a penitential day in the church year which encourages worshippers to reflect on their sins and faults, and challenges them to embrace a Lenten discipline of reflection, prayer, confession, and acts of humility and charity. Originally, the period of 40 days plus Sundays was to be a reminder of Jesus’ testing in the wilderness, and as a preparation for the Festival of Easter.
Throughout the season of Lent, we will also be holding a Light Lenten Supper of soup from around the world. Each Wednesday, at 6:00, beginning on February 24th, we will serve different soups and bread in the Church Apartment at Palisady 48. The meal will be followed at 7:00 by a musical worship service called Holden Evening Prayer. Please consider joining us for a time of meal, prayer, and worship.
Volunteer opportunity to work with the Roma Every Tuesday from 17.00-18.00, a group of mostly U.S. and other expat volunteers go to the Roma settlement of Plavecký Štvrtok. At a small recreation center located at the edge of the settlement, they tutor children from ages 6-18 in English. They have been meeting with the children since last Spring, and funded and organized a summer camp for 46 children in July. Additional volunteers are needed who could participate in the weekly tutoring sessions or share other skills or talents. An event focused on art or music would be of interest, and the children very much appreciate the opportunity for outings to museums, etc. Although it is by no means required, Slovak language skills are helpful. If you are interested in participating in this opportunity, please contact jannahaug@yahoo.com
Choir and Special Music Adult choir meets Tuesdays at 6 pm at Malý Kostol. Enter the church through the back door, off of the Next Apache courtyard. If you would like to participate, or if you have other musical gifts you would like to share, please contact our organist Ivana Sabanošová at 0904 246 731 or by email at sabanosova@gmail.com.
Women's Bible Study This group meets on Tuesdays from 11:45 am to 1:45 pm at the home of Jennifer Cummins. This fall we are studying the book of Daniel using the study guide and audio tapes of Beth Moore. Bring your lunch or a snack and Jennifer will provide beverages of coffee, tea or water. Free child care is also available. If you have questions, contact Janna Haug at jannahaug@yahoo.com.
Evening Bible Study and Discussion Group Pastor Haug is offering an evening Bible study on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Bible study takes place in the Church Flat at Palisady 48. The doorbell is marked “Schick.” Everyone is welcome!
Fellowship Hour Please join us for this time of conversation, coffee, and other refreshments at the Backpackers Hostel just down the street at Panenska 31. If you are able, please sign up to bring refreshments some Sunday. Serving as refreshment hosts has become a relatively simple job since moving to the Backpackers Hostel for fellowship. Hostel staff make the tea water and coffee, set out the cups and glasses, and clean up afterwards. All you need to do is bring a variety of home-made or packaged snacks or sweets and about 3 boxes of juice for children (1.5 or 2 liters each).
Worship Assistants Needed Look for the sign-up sheet at the Fellowship Hour each Sunday if you would like to participate in the worship service as readers, prayers leaders and ushers.
